Bridge taps. This extraneous length of dangling unterminated cable is a significant contributor of VDSL problems. Bridge taps change a pair’s impedance, and introduce reflections in the line thereby reducing overall signal strength. Bridge taps, particularly short taps, are much more of a problem for VDSL services. Bridge taps cause a “notch” effect which adversely affects the carriers’ signal strength at certain frequencies. This is why bridge tap detection is extremely important. Equally important are those reflections that have the appearance of bridge tap, but in fact are water or double-gauge changes.
